Medical Assist Dog
A real Southern Belle - she  loves to eat  watermelon, cantelope, zucchini and yellow squash, sweet potatoes, celery, broccoli, baked potatoes, spinach, green beans, peanuts, carrots, etc.

She's a willing taste-tester for any type of sandwich or cheese, too.

This photo was at the "dog park" in Orlando.  It has a lake, giant sand beach, overhanging "hammock" of live oak trees that shades a big grassy area, and a long wooden dock.

Belle doesn't swim much, but runs in and out of the water and watches the retrievers and water dogs.  Her favorite activities are running a group of chase and playing in all the soft sand.

Sassy Belle holds her own with dogs of all sizes there on the weekend.  Eveything from Yorkie puppies to Mastiffs visit the park and can run around loose at the lake, beach, woods and field.  She has some regular dog pals she sees there, and there are always some new tails to sniff, too.  She has the most fun with dogs her own age, regardless of type or size.

At home, she will wait outside the shower door for us to open the door. She jumps right in, then jumps back out when she is washed, rinsed and dried off.

Knowing that I take medication every morning and every night somehow made an impression on her.  If it starts to get late and I am on the computer, reading, or watching tv, she will come and jump at my legs and push her nose up under my wrist until I go take it.  Because I don't take my meds at the same time, we are not sure how she picked up on this  She lets me know when I NEED it. We didn't know if she heard a difference in my voice or breathing or could detect a change in my scent, but a university veternarian said it's scent.

She doesn't use this alert for anything else.  When she gives this alert I brag on her for reminding me, show her a little pill cup I keep on my desk, and then give her two Skippy Treats.  She always comes to the end of the loveseat for her "pay".   This is her job, and she takes it very seriously.

In August, 2006, she expanded her job description.  If I fall asleep and it gets past time for my meds, or I sleep in too late and haven't taken them , she will wake me up.  She is Bonzai Belle, leaping up in the air and bouncing off of me.  Then, she gives the meds signal with her nose under my wrist.  She will do this until I get up and take the meds.  She gets "paid" the standard wage of two Skippy Treats for this, also.

We are amazed at what she understands.

She recognizes quite a few words,  including toy, chewie (a rawhide chip), cookie, Daddy, Mommy, go get, where is, get out of that, give, Duck (a stuffed toy mallard), no bite, kissy lips, kiss (on the ear), run, ooh look, Daddy's kitty cat, that doesn't belong to you, Sassy Belle's Baby (a little fuzzy toy dog with an electronic bark), Spotted Puppy (a small stuffed floppy dalmation), and Little Yellow Baby (a plush gingerbread man-shaped toy about 6" tall that looks like it's had a lobotomy with a chainsaw since Sassy Belle chewed on it).

Belle understands groups of words, too.  "Spotted Puppy go Daddy." will  send her racing to Dale with the stuffed toy in her mouth, even if he's in another room.  Jacks are always aware of where each of their "people" are at all times.

With help from Dale, Little Yellow Baby has amazing adventures on the ceiling fan blades, on the back of the recliner, falling off the countertops, hiding under the bedclothes and in the laundry basket, peeking out of Dale's shoes, spinning around in my office chair, hiding in our desk and dresser drawers, being suspected of being kidnapped by Kitty, etc.

Sassy Belle always comes to the rescue.

She really likes it if Yellow Baby, Spotted Puppy or Duck get held under the blankets and she has to burrow under and drag them out.

If we don't keep a chew rawhide on hand for her at all times, the stuffed animals may have all their "stuff" pulled out.

Sassy Belle obeys the commands sit and stay, but  still has trouble with come, no, stay out of that, and some other "useful" phrases.   We assume she knows what they mean, but is just not obeying. This breed of dog is very active and requires a lot of hands-on attention.

When I had all the symptoms of Fibromyalgia, enjoying a pet like this would have been impossible.

This is Miss Sassy Belle Devereaux, our JRT Jack Russell Terrier.

Sassy Belle was a gift from our #1 boy, Roy; he raised and trained her.

We got her when she was 1 1/2 years old, in Sept, 2003.

At about 4 years old and 8.5 # now, she's fully grown. She's very small for her type, and has great color spots, so draws a lot of attention. Now that she's grown, she has a lot of freckles all over her belly, too.

Her average land speed, indoors or out,  must be about 95 mph!
